A região era chamada pelos tupinambás que a habitavam de Kirimurê, que significa grande mar interior. Foi rebatizada Baía de Todos os Santos pelos portugueses, em 1501. Em 1549 aportou na região um grupo de portugueses para construir Salvador, trazendo a cidade praticamente montada de Portugal.

The region was called by the inhabitants of tupinambás (tribe) Kirimurê, which means great inland sea. It was renamed the  Baía de Todos os Santos  by the Portuguese in 1501.  In 1549, a group of Portuguese  arrived in the region  to build Salvador, bringing the city virtually assembled from Portugal.   

Visando organizar as informações pretéritas, atuais e futuras de forma harmônica, foi criado o Instituto Kirimurê, um ambiente virtual onde pesquisadores, alunos de graduação e de  pós-graduação se encontram para discutir os mais diversos elementos de pesquisa sobre a Baía de Todos os Santos (BTS).

In order to organize information preterit, present and future in a harmonic way, was created Kirimurê Institute, a virtual environment where researchers, graduate and postgraduate meet to discuss the various elements of research on the  Baía de Todos os Santos  (BTS).
